The new general manager of the Harrison Hot Springs Resort, Scott Mawhinney, said that the resort is making a lot of efforts to solve the main problem of the public pool – finding well-certified lifeguards.
Are Hotel Pools Open
The public pool has been closed since the beginning of the epidemic, and in the summer its closure has increased concerns for residents and tourists. In early mid-May, Tourism Harrison announced that the public pool will be open on weekends from May 21, with the possibility of extending opening hours on weekdays. On June 17, it was announced that the pool would remain closed due to challenges in hiring certified lifeguards.

The public met with Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon Assemblyman Brad Vis in Harrison. Although Vis made it clear that he could not respond to the affairs of the district or the province, the topic of the mineral pool dominated most of the discussion. Chilliwack-Kent MLA Kelli Paddon also participated in several public lectures.
Local residents felt that the continued closure violated the conditional water license held by the hotel’s parent company, Saliance Global Holdings, until 2037. Part of the license is states that, “the flow of water shall be made available to the public at any time between 6 am and 8 pm every day in a place where the public is entitled to access it for free or the distribution company allows access to it for free. “
Even if the license is taken to the community, the Sts’ailes First Nation or another company, it will not solve the problem of lack of police.
At the town council meeting on August 8, Harrison Mayor Leo Facio announced the abundance of water in B.C. and even in the country it is difficult to find and maintain lifeguards, especially the Boston Bar and places operated by the Fraser Valley Regional District are mentioned as examples.

“As we all know, it’s in the news every night – the lack of police not only here, but in Vancouver and other parts of the province … and all of Canada,” he said. said Facio. “We cannot operate a pool without the safety of lifeguards.”
Mawhinney told the Observer that the hotel is “having a hard time” finding qualified people for the position. However, it may not be there for long.
Mawhinney said Harrison Watersports is closed on Labor Day and employees have been told the resort plans to hire three lifeguards. Separated, they hired a lifeguard from Chilliwack who had two sisters interested in education. He said the hotel is looking for at least four security guards.
To prevent shortages now and in the future, the hotel is working with a Toronto-based agency to hire in-house and other foreign hosts. There are many houses in the village for the lifeguards and other workers to use if they need accommodation.
Slow To Wake Up To Climate Change, Hotels Sector Vows To Tread More Lightly
Mawhinney said he will open the hotel’s pools to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and welcome 25 people from the country to the pools.
“The only reason I reduced Tuesday and Wednesday was because the hotel was full,” Mawhinney said. “When you come this afternoon you can’t swim in one of the pools, there are too many people.”
Although the pool and hotel are now full, the past two years have taken a toll, especially for tourists. Mawhinney said that COVID-19 and the resulting lack of travel have affected the hospitality industry in particular.
“Many people have been fired, and when fired, they will not come back,” he said. “They go to shopping malls, they go to real estate offices. Some of them, if they are creative enough, have their own home based business. Now we are in a big competition.”

“I really don’t think we’re going to have that problem next summer because I’m going to have solid lifeguards,” he told the Observer. “Once the first person enters, the second person will be easy, the third person will be easy, and we will do it if we are allowed to hire outside rescuers.” The new Hotel X Toronto by the Library Hotel Collection is more than just a typical Toronto hotel.
